O is for Organization Patrol

Standard

Well, I’m finally here again!!!  Sorry for the lack of posts, Initech and my bakery have been sucking my free time up.  Right now I’m watching the hockey game while blogging, and after I’m done I’m going to work out and watch the hockey game.  I am a moving girl!!!

So this went down several weeks ago, but I wanted to let you know about my organizational party that went down.  As you guys probably remember, I’m not the most organized person in the world.  I promise, I try to be, but the ugly truth is that I’m simply never going to be.  I’m always going to have weekends where I spend the entire day getting my life back in order.  Sorry!!

large-plastic-storage-containersThat being said, I knew it needed to be done, and as much as I didn’t want to, I decided it was finally time.  I got out the plastic storage bins, the garbage bags, the label maker, and the Pandora.  I cranked up the jams, opened the windows for some fresh air (this was like spring cleaning in January) and went to town.

It was a lot of work.  A. Lot. Of. Work.  Why do I keep some of the stuff I keep?  Receipts from 2 years ago??  Wind up toys from college Happy Meals?  Clothes from high school???  Man, I may have some problems.  But I spent a good part of my Saturday trying to fix that.  Things were sorted, put away, trashed, donated, and generally organized.  If I couldn’t find a reason to keep it, or a place for it to live, it went.  If I hadn’t worn the outfit in over a year, it was gone.  And if I knew I’d never pick it up again, it was out the door.

The results??  3 trash bags in the dumpster, my entire back seat of my car full of Goodwill donations, and a closet I can actually see again!  Hey, how bout that, I do have storage space in my bedroom!!  I guess that’s what happens when you clean out the outfits you wore for college homecoming all those years ago.

I know it won’t last.  I’ll find more stuff to bring home with me, and lose other things I already have, and in a few weeks I’ll have to do this all over again.  But for not, my house is rocking!!  It was so organized I threw a party at my place this past weekend, that’s how confident I was in my organizational prowess.  Bring it!!!

So I’m back, and I’m rocking my.alphabet.year again.  Next weekend will be a new adventure, and we’ll get going again as if we didn’t miss a beat. 🙂  I know life gets in the way sometime, but that’s not something I want to happen again.

For now, it’s back to working out and the Penguins game.  Question for all of you out there, is pita and hummus considered a “well-balanced dinner”??  Because that was my dinner tonight.  And it was delish.  I’m not sure it’s a super nutritious meal, though.  Hmmmm…maybe I’ll go eat a mango.

Until next weekend, have a fabulous week!!!!

Next Week: O is for Organization Patrol

Standard

In the very beginning of this blog, I stated that the simple mission of this year-long adventure was to grow as a person, do things I’ve never done before, making something of myself.  For the past 6 months I’ve been doing exactly that, and having a blast.  But when I sat down to create this adventure, I purposely put one item on the list that I wouldn’t want to do, just to make myself really step out of my comfort zone.  Next week, we’re going to tackle some organizing.

comicI’m not an organized person in a lot of ways.  I am that girl every morning who is fluttering around my house from room to room saying, “Where are my car keys now?!?”  While my books are alphabetized and my clothes color coordinated, my books are stacked everywhere and my clothes are probably everywhere except in my closet.  My baking items are haphazardly shoved in a catch-all drawer in my kitchen, and all those dumb trinkets we all collect over the years from one event or another are shoved in any nook and cranny I can find.  I mean well, I am just completely unorganized.

Since this blog is about growing, I figured the best way for me to grow would be to work on organizing my life a little more.  Papers, clothes, books, you name it, I’m sure every aspect of my life could use some shaking up and changing.  I can save, toss, store, or wear the items, it doesn’t matter, but my eventual goal is to hopefully leave my apartment more organized than before.

It’s a small apartment but a big task.  I have clothes from high school still hanging in my closet.  Books from bargain warehouses that I’m not sure I ever read.  Party favors from a St. Patrick’s Day party I never actually threw.  Man, this is a daunting task.  I’m determined to press on, though.  Grab some trash bags, some bins, and organize my life.  Keep, donate, throw out.  Get paperwork in order, find homes for everything and say, “Oh, I was looking for that!” at least a half dozen times.

If you’re free next weekend and would like to help, I’ll provide food and endless entertainment.  If not, look for the updates on here next weekend.

Is today not the most wonderful day in the world outside?  Sunny, 68 degrees, in JANUARY!?!?!  Why’s Al Gore complaining about this global warming thing again?  It’s fantastic!!!

Have a wonderful week!  I’m gonna make some dinner and settle down for some Downton Abbey.  Oooooooohhhhhhh yeah!!!

The Rules of the Game

Why were our ABC boards never this trendy in elementary school?

By now the anticipation must be coursing through your veins: Lis is starting an AWESOME BLOG!  You could barely sleep last night after reading my post-Olympic post.  You’re dying to know how I’m going to pull this off in a year.  Some of you are thinking to yourself, “I wonder if I can join in on these adventures?”

The answers to those questions are, of course I’m going to pull this off, and YES PLEASE JOIN ME!

Before we start, though, here are the rules I’ve established for the next year:

1. I will complete one adventure every other week for the next year, starting August 3, 2012. This can be slightly flexible to allow for other weekend interruptions, such as holidays, weddings, and dreaded work at Initech.

2. As much as possible, I will try to go in alphabetical order.  That is not always possible, though, given the Pennsylvania weather.  So some weekends will be out of order.  All letters will be covered by the end of the year, though.

3. The alphabet list I have is a working list.  It can, at any time, be altered depending on my mood and ideas.  Part of this year-long journey is about growth.  Maybe even physically.  Would it be such a crime for me to be able to reach the top shelf at the grocery store without climbing on the lower shelves?

4. These activities are designed for anyone at any time.  I can (and plan to) complete many of these activities a la solo.  It’s a way for me to relax, unwind, and regroup.  However, many of these activities are that much more amazing with friends and family, and trust me, over the next year you’ll meet them all.  That being said, let me know if you want to join me on any adventures.  Most of them will be announced a week in advance, so if you’re free, and looking for a fun activity, feel free to let me know.

5. We are working on a next-to-nothing budget right now.  The cheaper the better.  There are a few exceptions to this, which you’ll read about, but even those are being researched, coupon-ed, and discounted as much as possible.

And now, what you’ve all been waiting for: The list of events
