P is for Pamper Party

Man, how is my vacation over again?!  Do I REALLY have to return to Initech again tomorrow?  Blah!

So I’m back from my internet hiatus, back from New Jersey, and back from my vacation.  I headed home for an extended weekend, and left my computer and cell phone charger at home.  The computer was left at home on purpose…the charger, not so much.  But I unplugged for a few days, and it was a wonderful and relaxing few days.

During my break from Initech, though, I managed to head to a day spa for some R&R.  I headed out with my old college roommate for a manicure, pedicure, and massage.  She found an unreal Living Social deal and we decided to splurge and indulge in a little pampering.  Everyone deserves a treat every once in awhile!

Here’s a fun fact about me: before this week, I had never had a manicure, pedicure, OR massage.  Crazy, right?  Not really when you know me.  I’m not a “pampering” kind of person.  I don’t dress up a lot, and there’s never been a moment where I’ve thought, “Man, if only my nails were professionally done right now.”  That’s just not who I am.

I’ll admit, though, I was excited to try all of these things, and all at one stop.  The manicure and pedicure were definitely a fun experience, especially the always stressful decision of picking your nail color.  Wild, safe, unnatural, natural?  In the end I feel my color choices reflect who I am…a natural pale pink on my fingers, that go with anything and is considered a “safe” choice.  A bright purple on my toes, that shows my wild side, but only if I’m willing to show you my feet 🙂

head_massageThe massage…wow, the massage.  First off, I hear a lot of people tell me how the first time they went for a massage they were nervous to have someone else touch them when they had little to no clothing on.  Maybe I’m crazy, but I had no problem with that.  I’m not Girls Gone Wild crazy, but I’m comfortable enough with myself and my body to care less if someone else gives me a massage.  And I LOVED every second of it.  I had this moment mid-massage where I was afraid I was going to fall asleep, and my only concern was to not fall asleep and start snoring.  How awkward would that be?  I would be the one who totally did that too. 🙂  So I laid there and thought over and over again, “Don’t fall asleep…don’t fall asleep…don’t fall asleep.”  It worked.  No naps, no snoring, no awkward half-naked moments.  A successful massage!

Now that I’m relaxed, though, it’s time to head back to work for another long work week.  I am loving all these days off, but it makes me want to return to work even less once my vacation is over.  Anyone want to donate to my retirement fund?  I bake cupcakes 🙂

Have a wonderful week.  Go get a massage.  Embrace your inner wild-child, strip down, and relax!!  It’s such a wonderful feeling.

See you soon,

Next Week: P is for Pamper Party

220px-NSYNC-Home_for_Christmas_(album_cover)Ah, it’s the most wonderful time of the year!!  The Christmas spirit has fully descended upon the greater city of Pittsburgh!  I know some people grumble about how much people “over do” Christmas, and I’m sorry if you feel that way, because I LOVE decorating for Christmas.  Absolutely love it!!  I’m one of those people who gets all of my decorations out from the back of my closet, crank the Christmas tunes, and get busy!  If you think to yourself, “I bet no one actually listens to the N*Sync Christmas album anymore from start to finish, you’re totally wrong, because I do!  Several times!!

Before I really get into the Christmas spirit, though, I’m going to take this next week to spend some time relaxing and unwinding.  I work Monday and Tuesday, and have a half day on Wednesday.  Then it’s time to bake 3 dozen cupcakes for an order, and head off to New Jersey for some much needed family time.  But in the midst of all that family time, I’ll be heading off for another Alphabet Adventure.

Next weekend I will be heading out for the ultimate relaxation experience: a spa day with my old college roommate.  Now, before I tell you about all the fun we have planned, let me be honest: I’ve never been a “pamper” kind of person.  pamperpartiesI have never set foot inside a nail studio.  I’ve never paid for my nails to be done, or had anything fun like a massage, a make up artist make me up, or my feet pedicured.  You’re lucky I pay $40 for a professional to chop my hair off 😉  I’m just not that sort of person.  My old roommate, though, LOVES that kind of stuff.  And, I’ll be honest, it sounds nice to pay someone to do my nails.  So when she found a killer Living Social deal a few weeks ago, we scooped it up.  For $50 we’ll get manicures, pedicures, and a 45 minutes massage.  Total zen bliss….yes, I might get there!!

This is going to be a true adventure, though, because I’ve never experienced anything like this before.  I guess that’s why I love this blogging adventure: I have definitely stepped outside of my comfort zone, and learned to experience a new side to life.  It’s the time of year where you start to reflect on the past year, the goods the bads, as 2012 comes to a close.  Starting My Alphabet Year has definitely been a highlight of this past year!

Have a wonderful weekend!  Decorate for Christmas for me!!  Bust out the N*Sync album, I know you still have it somewhere!!!

J is for Junk Food Junkie

Ah, another glorious Initech weekend.  Things have been much better there of recent, and I’m actually, gasp, not dreading returning tomorrow.  It probably doesn’t hurt that I found out two weeks ago I have 62 hours of vacation time to use by the end of the year.  I’m going crazy with my vacation days! 🙂

Next week might be E is for Exercise, because I need to work off all of the calories I ate this weekend.  I can’t complain, though, sometimes indulging yourself in ridiculous fun weekends like this one is what life is all about.

So junk food…it is my kryptonite.  If I could eat nothing but junk food, and be happy and healthy, I would.  But, then again, who wouldn’t. This weekend, I decided to indulge in all of my favorites, all of those things you usually say to yourself, “That sounds delicious, but I know I shouldn’t have it,” before sticking to your celery and beet salad.  Not this weekend.  This weekend I thought “That sounds delicious, and I ate it!!  Mwahahaha.

First up, Friday night, I had a Sweet 16 party.  My first Sweet 16 party in a decade.  Man, that made me feel super old.  It’s been 10 years since I had my own Sweet 16.  Where has life gone?  It was a fun party, though. There was junk food EVERYWHERE!!!!  Pizza, chips, cheese balls, cake, cupcakes, soda, it was a fat kid’s paradise!  Which I guess makes me a fat kid, because it was delicious!!!

One question to ponder, though, as you relax on your Sunday off…when hosting a party, why does everyone only buy ONE kind of Doritos?  I’d say 75% of the time they buy the Nacho Cheese Doritos, and forget about the Cool Ranch.  I LOVE COOL RANCH DORITOS!!!!!  Maybe people don’t understand how deep my love really is, but I swear, next party I host, there will be two types of Doritos there for guests to chose from.  I do not discriminate!!

On Saturday, I had the ultimate sugar overload in the morning, because I am currently taking cake decorating classes.  Yes, me, owner of a small bakery, does not know how to properly decorate a cake.  It’s OK, though, I’m learning.  The class is super early on Saturday mornings, though, so I usually roll out of bed, shower, and hit some sort of breakfast stand on my way to the class.  Usually Panera, or Starbucks, something that tries to give me healthier options.  Not yesterday, though.  I turned up my radio, rolled down the window, and cruised into McDonalds.  I still knew my order from memory: A number 2, orange juice, extra ketchup.  Gosh, how long has it been since I had McDonalds breakfast?  I wish I could tell you it’s disgusting, full of fat and salt and cholesterol, and I never want to eat another bite of it.  But McDonalds breakfast may be the best high-calorie, fatty, fried, awful for your body breakfast out there.  It’s so delicious.  I wish I could eat it every day!!

After that, it was two hours in cake decorating class, where I made a chocolate raspberry cake with vanilla icing, and then home to enjoy my afternoon.  Except, wait for it, my junk food love did not end there!!  I went over to a friends house for dinner, where we had salad.  I know, salad on my junk food weekend.  Don’t worry, though, for dessert I had homemade apple pie.  Then, after a quick run down the PA Turnpike, I met my brother for James Bond in IMAX.  That means….movie theater popcorn!!!!!   AHHHHHHHH!!!!  That’s a treat I never indulge in.  Never ever.  This weekend, though, there are no limits.

Today is detox day.  Don’t laugh, I’m being serious.  After all of the sugar, starch, salt, fat, and calories I’ve ingested in the past 36 hours, today is all about getting it out of my system.  Lots of water, lots of body-friendly food, lots of enjoying the fact that healthy foods can be wonderful too!!  I’m thinking wheat germ and bananas for lunch…Yummy!!!  (and no, that’s not a sarcastic yummy, I actually love those two foods together!  If you have any good detox ideas or suggestions, though let me know.

All in all, a very good weekend.  I don’t think I’d want to make this a weekly adventure, but once in awhile it’s nice to eat that cupcake you know you shouldn’t eat, or bite into a delicious Sausage Egg McMuffin and not feel guilty about it.

Long live the junk food!!  Long live my poor stomach!!!

Have a wonderful week.  See you all next week.

So Many Cupcakes

I have almost 200 cupcakes in my fridge…

If anyone decides to rob me tonight, they will get the added bonus of some sweet treats to go along with the TV, washing machine, and Ikea furniture.

Lucky you!!

On a side note…what does one wear to a hoe down?  Being a Northern gal with roots to New Jersey, I can perfect a Snooki hair poof better than Western/Southern apparel.  I like Gap and H&M…I don’t think I’m going to have a lot of “country” clothing in my closet.

This might be a long night of trying to figure out what to wear…Maybe if I stand in front of my closet long enough inspiration will come to me. 🙂

Next Week: J is for Junk Food Junkie

Well, for those of you new to this blog, I like to bake 🙂  That may be the understatement of a lifetime.  I’m trying to open my own bakery, and even have a blog detailing all the gory and less-than-glorious details about it.

So I’ve debated when I was going to choose this alphabet letter for one of my alphabet weekends, because, if I’m honest with you, I make baked goods, and all those delicious foods we’re not allowed to eat probably every weekend.  There needed to be a special reason for me to bust this letter out.

I think next weekend I’ve finally found that reason!!  One of my favorite people in the entire world, Taylor, is having her Sweet 16 party next weekend (I met Taylor when she was, um, 11, and like 6 ft tall 🙂  I feel very old.  And very short.) and I’m baking a bazillion and twenty cupcakes for her.  Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean.

I’m also taking a baking decorating class this coming weekend, where I will learn how to tort a cake, then put all sorts of designs on it.  Like leaves and flowers and all that “artsy” stuff people like.  Roll out the fondit, and let’s get our hands dirty!!

On top of that, Taylor’s birthday is a hoe-down themed party, which means lots of crazy awful junk food that is consumed deep in the heart of Texas.  So I felt it was only fitting that next weekend I celebrate J is for Junk Food Junkie.

Here’s the worst kept secret about my life: I love junk food.  I wish I had the metabolism of a 6 year old ADHD boy, but I don’t :-(.  I have the  metabolism of maybe a 65 year old invalid.  Which means I look at food and it attaches itself to my ass.  I’ve learned I can’t fight it, and have accepted the fact that I will always have curves, and hits, and some junk in the trunk, but I do usually try to limit how much junk food I eat.  Fast food is a treat (or an “I’m PMS-ing” indulgence), and even though I bake a ton of stuff, I rarely do more than taste test.  It’s all about quantity.

Not this weekend, though.  The gloves are coming off!!  We are going to bake, and eat, and party, and have an amazing good time!  I am not going to guilt myself into thinking “I shouldn’t be eating this”, and ruining my weekend.  I am going to bake until I can’t bake anymore!!  And, the best news of them all, I am going to have the time of my life doing it!!

So if you’re in the area, and would like to bake, eat, or go crazy with me, let me know.  I’ll probably hit up some sort of greasy diner too, just to make sure I cover all my bases.  I mean, what more could you want from a weekend than cupcakes, icing, ice cream, and chili cheese fries?

I’ll be back next weekend to report on my activities, barring, of course, that Initech does not force me to work all weekend!!  Hope I’m not too large! 😉

I know I said no more bakery posts, but I can’t help myself, I’m so excited!!!

We are finally launching our fundraising campaign tonight, and all I can say is its about time!! This has been more than a month in planning. I’m excited to see what happens. I hope this helps to spread the word about our bakery and raise some money for our bakery business.

Yay Christmas!!

The Test of Friendship

You know that saying “Blood is thicker than water,” meaning that when the chips are down, your family will always be the most important part of your life?  I used to think it was the weirdest saying (not to mention a little weird…why am I reducing my family to a pool of blood?), but sometimes, as I’ve grown older, I see the value in such an off-balance saying.

It’s been one of those weeks where friendships have been tested in my life, not always with positive results.  It’s frustrating when you feel like you’ve poured time and energy and support into a relationship only to see it sink over a stupid argument,  Life moves on, and I realize I’ll move on with it, with one fewer friendship and a few extra hours into my schedule.  It still comes as a slap in the face, though, especially when it was unexpected.

Friends, what do you do in these situations?  When you’re at odds with a friend, whether a BFF or a fringe friend from college you occasionally see at weddings, what do you do when you don’t agree?  Do you let things work themselves out naturally?  Do you confront the problem head on, and hash it out through the arguing that’s bound to happen?  Do you move on, or force yourself to eat a piece of humble pie in the name of friendship?

Oh well.  If it wasn’t meant to be, it wasn’t meant to be.

In happier news, only 72 hours until I take my mom to her first Bruce Springsteen concert ever!  I know, for those of you who know my mom it’s crazy that’s she’s never been to a Bruce concert before.  So I’m excited to finally be crossing this off both of our bucket lists on Saturday.  About flippin’ time!

Time to work on my bakery.  Oy.  Logging that overtime now so I have extra $$$ to spend on my bakery.  Haha, I wish I cared about Initech more, really I do.  But I don’t.

Happy second half of the week!
